Healthy, Happy & Well

Trending, followers, viral, OH MY! While I could be talking about the “Up-cycling an Avocado” Reel on Instagram, I could ALSO be talking about the 2024 American College of Sports Medicine Top Fitness Trends of 2024

Throughout the next few weeks, Vos Wellness will be highlighting a few of these fitness trends that are high up on the 2024 list. You can expect to learn more about them, enjoy a new perspective, and grow your exposure to peak your interest, so you, perhaps, try these trends out in the future!

#1 Wearable Technology

As I exited the corporate space, wearable technology was becoming more and more trusted- advancing leaps and bounds in the health and wellness industry over the previous 7+ years. People used wearables to monitor blood pressure, heart rate, technology even existed that performed EKG’s (electrocardiograms) to monitor your heart as it beat through its unique series of electrical impulses and subsequent contraction of the chambers. More on how your heart works? Access the American Heart Association link below. Flash forward, and wearable technology is a predicted top fitness trend for 2024 - and it’s been in TOP 3 since 2016. Funny enough, at that time, I was just starting my career as a Health Coach!

#2 Worksite Health Promotion

Employers have an incredible opportunity to create cultures of health within their workplaces. You can find this value prioritized by Fortune 500 companies. For example, Salesforce, popular cloud-based software company touted for supporting the technological advancement of it’s client organizations including customer management, sales, analytics, and so on,  offers its employees counseling and therapy services, access to rich time off benefits, substance abuse support, and access to plentiful time off for when life’s circumstances require your more undivided attention such as the care-taking of a family member. Nike, the “Just Do It”, swoosh, and popular sportswear and athletic gear company, in a more fitness-related example, encourages its employees to “sport daily” by making it easy for them to access sports and fitness centers through gym offerings and Nike Sports Centers. There is so much action happening in this space of worksite health promotion. Whether you’re a SAHM (Stay At Home Mom) and have health benefits through your spouse or you are employed and have access to your own Employee Wellness Program, keep your eye on your benefits. Employee Wellness Programs and Worksite Health Promotion are progressive and ever-changing not to mention valuable and sought after as we begin 2024.

#3 Fitness Programs for Older Adults

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is a widely used saying in the health and wellness industry. It is related to the need for healthy living habits that support a healthy aging process. Research suggests that a combination of strength training (examples: weights, gym machines), cardio (examples: walking, jogging) and flexibility (example: stretching) work together to prevent falls that lead to fractures. Falls are the biggest risk for injury and fatal injury in older adults age 65 and older. With falls being preventable through the regular, progressive adoption of exercise, it is no wonder that Fitness Programs for Older Adults are top of the charts this year! It is logical to seek out the support of experts in this field to ensure that training programs are safe and effective. By committing time, energy and effort to progressive exercise, you support your independence as you age, the reduction of the impact of disease as you age, and your quality of life as you age.

#4 Exercise For Weight Loss

Over the course of the last decade plus, the prevalence of obesity in the United States hardly let up. The U.S. is still suffering from over a 40% prevalence of obesity in adults. Despite social and organizational change promoting “rethink your drink” campaigns, limiting/omitting added sugar, integration of healthier sources of fats and carbs, and a whole-foods, plant-based eating pattern, unhealthy food options are still readily available. Highly palatable (easy on the taste buds) and ultra processed foods (foods containing many sources of added sugar, salt, fat, preservatives) plague grocery stores, convenience stores, and restaurants. In addition to nutrition, exercise is understood as a beneficial tool for weight loss along with healthy nutrition changes. Regular, consistent exercise including strength training and cardio supports a healthy body weight and here’s why: When you lose weight, you are challenging the status quo of your body. Your body doesn’t like change, especially drastic body weight change. When you start making healthy choices to support weight loss, your body tries really hard to preserve its current weight. When you incorporate exercise, you’re supporting your body through the weight loss process by challenging your muscles so your body preserves muscle mass as opposed to your body using your muscle mass for energy (calories) to make up for lost energy due to the healthier eating habits and fewer calories you are taking in. Additionally, exercise is a fantastic way to maintain weight loss once you’ve lost weight. The same holds true, when you preserve your muscle mass, your metabolism is higher than if you were to lose muscle mass.
